Keeping Your Financial Paperwork in Order

January 05, 2022

New Year’s resolutions can be great motivators, but any time of year is good to get your financial paperwork in order. Managing your important documents can make your financial life easier.

Now’s the time to get your finances organized. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Organize your tax documents.
  • Stay up to date on changes on your credit report.
  • Organize medical records, flexible spending account (FSA), and health savings account (HSA) paperwork.
  • Know where key documents reside and be ready in case of emergency.

Make sure you have the right file folders and storage cabinets for important paperwork and separate your documents into three categories:

  • Keep Forever (including birth certificates, marriage licenses, educational records, citizenship records, etc.)
  • Keep for a Limited Time
  • Discard

Securely get rid of anything you don’t need by shredding them. Make sure to also have a spot for quick access to paperwork in the case of an emergency. This also includes valuable family archives and photos.

Stay organized by having regular “paperwork dates” to clear out any backlog. This will help you prepare for tax season and other financial meetings. Feel free to reach out for more financial organization tips!
